Urgent Witness/Drawn Remains brings together the work of Daniel Erban, Michelle Gay, Sadko Hadzihasanovic, Emmanuel Kourounis, and John Scott. Each of these artists use drawing to comment on the world around them.
The subjects drawn by the artists are pushed into a critical spotlight through sometimes urgent, and always intense, markings and gestures. They are painfully familiar, often personal, and impose an intimacy that is at once provocative and disagreeable. With the array of mediums now available to artists, drawing is not always seen as legitimate as others. Yet it is immediately accessible to and possible for anyone with a BIC pen and a piece of paper, and it is as ubiquitous as doodles in a high-school student’s duotang.
