In Horror/Suspense/Romance/Porn/Kung-Fu, Kelly Mark fills YYZs Y gallery with the glow of fifteen television monitors. This new video-installation is part of Mark’s ongoing investigation of ‘television’ as a simple source material, which in the past has included such works as Prime Time (1999) and Glow House (2001-2005). Mark has sought to capture a mere suggestion or impression of each filmic genre or style by simply recording the cast light of each of these films as they bathed her apartment walls. For Horror/Suspense/Romance/Porn/Kung-Fu Mark has produced five unique video installations, each representing one of the five different genres represented in the exhibition title. Quiet and unassuming, these works provoke the investigation of liminal modes of perception and the possibility of understanding the familiar, ambient glow of the television medium as an almost physical thing.
