In her upcoming performance hyper-gesture, Duff continues to explore the conditions and limitations imposed on the body within the context of the mall. Toronto’s Eaton Centre, legally a commercially owned space, ironically holds the facade of ‘public space.’ Given this pretense the mall regulates codes of behaviour. These rules are manifested both implicitly and explicitly in such forms as the building’s architecture, the presence of security guards and monetary exchange. The public is invited to participate in this interactive site-specific performance which seeks to illuminate the manifestations of gesture, movement and voice articulated within and beyond the expected parameters of the shopping mall.
On site at YYZ, an exhibition of documents collected from Tangy Duff’s Pacific Centre Mall intervention (Vancouver, May 9 1998) will be featured. Also, during an artist talk Duff will discuss her work and premier a new short video Prosthetic Territories, which features the many performances done as a part of The Elephantiasis Ears Series.
