Superstition, pattern, steel, mineral, dirt. Some labour takes a spine; some takes something harder to name. Hynes is interested in what a working life costs beyond what is measured, and in what a place builds around the work in order to survive it. The cut worm forgives the plow. This work is less sure it should.

Tanea Hynes
Tanea Hynes (b. Labrador City, NL) works across photography, sculpture, video, and drawing, attending to labour and its material culture. She holds an MFA from Concordia University and a BFA from NSCAD. Her 2021 artist edition WORKHORSE and the exhibition of the same name at The Rooms drew on the subarctic mining economy she was born into. Hynes is the 2021 Roloff Beny Foundation Fellow in photography and was long-listed for the Scotiabank New Generation Photography Award in 2022 and 2023. Her work is held in the Canada Council Art Bank and the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Art Bank. She is represented by KIN in Brussels.
